Architectural Competition: Maksimir Stadium and Svetice SRC Interview: Prof. Arch. Krešimir Ivaniš

Krešimir Ivaniš is one of Croatia’s most distinguished architects and urbanists, whose professional work has long been marked by a sustained engagement with the relationship between architecture, the city, and public infrastructure. This conversation with Ivaniš opens up questions surrounding the development of Zagreb’s sports infrastructure throughout the twentieth century, its role in shaping the city’s urban identity, and the key cycles of development that left a lasting mark on Zagreb’s spatial organization. Particular attention is given to sports and recreational zones as important urban resources, as well as to their present condition, potential, and challenges within the context of contemporary urban development.

At the center of the conversation is also the Maksimir area, one of the most sensitive and symbolically significant sites within Zagreb’s sporting topography. Ivaniš reflects on the relationship between the stadium and Maksimir Park, as well as offering a personal reflection on Vladimir Turina and his stadium project, as well as commentary on later interventions, while situating these discussions within broader contemporary European and global trends in stadium architecture, where stadiums increasingly transcend their purely sporting function and are understood as complex public, urban, and social spaces.
